mom reads dad’s postcard about returning home,
the text illegible and its edges shriveled. for your burnt ham, semi-cooked rice and the December cold
that freezes blood away from your head and my heart.
so, i am coming home to you, because we cannot meet in the middle.

because, most days, i will have to understand that there is no way to love someone without some form of detachment, without allowing yourself the same freedom to love someone in a way that isn’t eaten up by greedy need. because i have to love him enough to be selfless about things like life getting in the way.
